Backwaters of Kerala

Backwaters of Kerala

Kerala backwaters are a series of brackish lagoons and lakes parallel to the Arabian Sea coast of Kerala state (known as Malabar coast) in South India. The network consists of five large lakes connected by canals, which are both man-made and natural, fed by 38 rivers, and span nearly half the length of the state of Kerala. The Kerala Backwater is a network of interconnected canals, rivers, lakes and inlets, which is a maze system built by more than 900 km of waterways, and sometimes compared to American Bayou. There are many towns and cities in the midst of this scenario, which serve as the starting and end points of backwater cruises. National waterway number from Kollam to Kottapuram covers a distance of 3, 205 km and runs parallel to the coastline of southern Kerala, which facilitates both cargo traffic and backwater tourism.

There is a unique ecosystem in backwaters – fresh water comes from the seawater of the Arabian Sea. In some areas, such as the Vembanad Kayal, where a barrage has been built from the sea near Kumarakom saltwater, it is prevented from going deep inside, keeping the fresh water. Such fresh water is extensively used for irrigation.
